The Weave

Among the countless theories proposed to explain the hidden structure of creation, none has proven more enduring than the concept of the Great Weave.

Though described by different names throughout the Realms, nearly every philosophical and theological tradition recognizes the existence of an unseen framework that binds all things together. Mountains, oceans, civilizations, memories, and even the Realms themselves are believed to exist not as isolated creations, but as interconnected parts of a greater whole.

These connections are known as Threads.

Despite their name, Threads are not physical objects. They cannot be measured, collected, or observed through ordinary means. Rather, they are understood to be the fundamental bonds from which existence itself is ordered. Every Realm, every place, every living being, and every choice forms part of an immeasurably vast tapestry whose full design has never been witnessed.

The origin of the Threads remains uncertain.

Some scholars argue they emerged during the Fracture, binding together what had been separated from the First Story.

Others maintain that the Threads existed long before the Fracture and merely became visible through division, much as the individual colors of light become visible only after passing through a prism.

No consensus has ever been reached.

Whatever their origin, the Threads are believed to transcend both space and time.

A single Thread may connect two distant Realms that have never shared a common history. Another may endure across generations, linking lives separated by centuries. Entire civilizations have risen and fallen without recognizing the unseen Patterns that shaped their place within the greater Weave.

The Great Weave is not believed to dictate fate.

This distinction has remained central to nearly every serious study of the subject.

While the Threads reveal relationships between people, places, and events, they do not compel any single outcome. Every decision alters the Weave in ways both subtle and profound, strengthening certain Patterns while giving rise to entirely new ones. In this way, the tapestry of creation is understood to be neither fixed nor chaotic, but perpetually unfinished.

As new Realms emerge, new Threads are formed.

As old Realms fade, their Threads do not simply vanish. Though weakened or transformed beyond recognition, they are believed to remain within the Weave in forms not yet fully understood. This principle has given rise to the widely held belief that nothing born of the First Story is ever truly lost.

Knowledge of the Great Weave remains incomplete.

Only a rare few individuals throughout history have claimed the ability to perceive the Threads directly. Such accounts are regarded with equal measures of reverence and skepticism. Those who possess this gift often describe the Weave not as an ordered lattice, but as an ever-changing tapestry whose Patterns shift with every choice, every loss, every act of creation, and every story yet to be told.

Whether the Great Weave possesses purpose, intention, or consciousness has long been debated.

Some traditions regard it as the living expression of the First Story.

Others insist it is simply the natural order through which creation sustains itself.

Neither interpretation has been proven.

Even so, few ideas have shaped the history of the Realms more profoundly than the belief that all things, no matter how distant they may appear, remain connected by Threads that neither time nor separation can fully erase.
