The Midnite Atelier

No surviving account records the origin of the Midnite Atelier.

Unlike the oldest kingdoms, whose foundations have long since been lost to time, the Atelier leaves no evidence that it was ever built. There are no stories of its construction, no names of its architects, and no memory of the first traveler to cross its threshold. Whether it was fashioned by unknown hands or emerged through some greater design remains one of the oldest unanswered questions in all known lore.

What is known is that the Atelier appeared only after the Fracture.

As the fragments of the First Story drifted farther from one another, the worlds grew increasingly isolated. Entire civilizations rose believing themselves alone in creation. Others forgot that neighboring realms had ever existed at all. Yet despite this separation, the unseen bonds that connected every fragment of the First Story endured.

Where those bonds converged most strongly, the Midnite Atelier came to stand.

The Atelier is neither a kingdom nor a Realm.

It exists in the silence between them.

Its halls do not belong to any known world, though they touch countless others. Within its walls, distance holds little meaning. Corridors lengthen or shorten without warning. Stairways lead to places they did not the day before. Rooms appear, disappear, and return as though responding to movements within the greater Weave itself.

Most remarkable are its doors.

Some open into neighboring chambers.

Others lead directly into distant Realms separated by impossible distances. A traveler may step from the quiet warmth of the Atelier into an ancient forest where the stars never move, a forgotten city suspended above an endless sea, or a kingdom that has existed only in legend. No map has ever cataloged every door, and no expedition has succeeded in exploring them all.

For this reason, many scholars believe the Atelier does not create paths between worlds.

It reveals those that already exist.

As the Weave shifts and new Patterns emerge, so too do new passages within the house. Forgotten Realms may become accessible once more, while familiar doors may close for centuries without explanation. Whether these changes are governed by purpose or by natural law remains fiercely debated.

Countless orders, philosophers, and explorers have devoted their lives to understanding the Atelier’s place within creation.

Some teach that it is the final remnant of the First Story, preserved when all else was divided.

Others claim it is a living expression of the Weave itself—a place where the countless Threads of existence gather before continuing onward into the worlds beyond.

A smaller, more controversial tradition argues that the Atelier was never intended to connect the Realms at all. According to these scholars, its true purpose is not to guide travelers between worlds, but to ensure that the fragments of the First Story never drift so far apart that they cease to belong to one another.

No evidence has ever conclusively proven any of these beliefs.

Even so, one truth remains beyond dispute.

Every known journey between the Realms begins, ends, or is forever changed by the Midnite Atelier.
