Character Development Intensive
Service Description
Strong characters are the foundation of every memorable story. Plot may drive events, but it is character that creates emotional connection, reader investment, and lasting impact. When characters feel flat, inconsistent, or underdeveloped, even the most imaginative premise can lose its power. A focused character development process helps ensure your story resonates on a deeper level. With more than 10 years of publishing experience and eight years running an independent publishing imprint, I’ve worked closely with authors across genres to strengthen character-driven storytelling. My experience working with both independent publishing and traditional publishers, including Charlesbridge and Sourcebooks, has given me a strong understanding of what makes characters compelling, marketable, and emotionally authentic to readers. This intensive is designed to help authors deepen, refine, and strengthen their character work at any stage of the writing process—whether you are outlining a new manuscript or revising a completed draft. We can work on: • Character depth, motivation, and internal logic • Emotional arcs and transformation across the story • Protagonist and antagonist development • Supporting character roles and narrative function • Relationships, conflict, and interpersonal dynamics • Character voice, dialogue, and individuality • Consistency and continuity across the manuscript • Strengthening stakes through character decisions • Identifying and fixing flat or underdeveloped characters • Aligning character arcs with plot structure • Building more compelling emotional stakes • Ensuring genre-appropriate characterization Every strong story begins with characters who feel real, even in the most fantastical or high-concept worlds. Together, we’ll focus on making your characters more dimensional, emotionally grounded, and purposeful within your narrative. My approach is both analytical and intuitive. We’ll look at how your characters function within the story structure, but also at how they feel on the page—what drives them, what challenges them, and how convincingly they change over time. The goal is not just technical improvement, but deeper emotional resonance. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting. Whether you’re struggling with a single character or refining an entire cast, this intensive is designed to help you identify what’s working, what isn’t, and how to strengthen your story from the inside out.
